Do you want to go on a long trail ride but don't know what to pack in to your saddlebag? Have no fear, I am here to help with that. The first things I list are very important and should be brought on any trail ride, long or short. Here is the main list:

1. bright orange or hot pink duck tape - for emergency repairs or marking trails

2. hoof pick - for things that get lodged in your horse's hoof

3. brush - for over night rides or to clear mud and dirt from wounds

4. reflective vest - for being out after dark on a road

5. reflective leg wraps for your horse - again for being out after dark on a road

6. tie on poncho - if it rains

7. leather laces - to repair tack or to tie things to saddle

8. extra halter, lead rope, and reins - in case halter, lead rope, or reins break

9. first aid kit

The next list is recommended but not as necessary as the list above.

1. cell phone

2. keys

3. emergency contact information and a pen with paper

4. multipurpose tool - cutting kindle for fires or defense

5. brass whistle - more audible than yelling for help

6. flashlight - if lost at night

7. emergency blanket

8. reflective tape

9. red bandana - useful as an emergency flag and much more

10. plenty of water - to stay hydrated

11. energy bar or a sandwich - to keep your energy up

12. sunblock

13. lip balm - for chapped lips

14. small tube of petroleum jelly - for small cuts or chafing

15. road map of the area where you plan to ride.

Below is a picture of one of the many styles of saddlebags.
