So I for one always wonder this myself (me being a barrel racer). So what is the key to a great barrel horse, may you ask? well there are so many opinions out there online so here are 2 of those and 1 of my own.
Body Build
The Temperament The build of the body is important so they can run fast and turn tight around the barrels. What is the correct build for this? well, slopping shoulders, short cannon bones, long underline, short top-line, and low hocks. this all leads to the speed of the horse.
2. The Temperament
The temperament is a very important. If the horse bucks, rears, kicks, and bites, then it is a terrible idea for a barrel horse. If the horse walks, trots, canters, gallops, and doesn't rear, kick, buck, and bite, then it is a good fit for a barrel horse.
3. you and your horses connection
The connection between you and your horses has a big part in barrel racing also. Think about this, if you have a boyfriend but you don't fully trust him? when he asks you to do something fast and then asks you to do it faster, are you willing and happy to do it? No? Ok, now if you fully trust him and he asks and says the same thing, do you do it faster? YES! Now put that to you and your horses relationship. Horses are prey animals that are letting us ride them and do shows when they don't have to do anything for us, but they are like a girlfriend/boyfriend relationship. we have to do both ways, we have to trust them too.
