Lameness In Horses

Writer's picture: Mia BadenhopMia Badenhop

Wen horses are lame, it is mostly below the knee or hock. If you see your horse limping or feel heat in the leg, quickly get off and untack and put in stall. Then call the farrier or vet to figure out the source of the lameness. You might want to call the farrier first because they know the foot and lower limbs. If they think that the vet should get involved, then call the vet. Most of the time you have to put the horse on stall rest. This means they are in their stall until the vet says that they are ok to ride again.
