Fallon Taylor says to do the pattern fast the first time to see how fast you can go with out the training. After that first time, slow down and do the pattern at a walk to get the turns tighter. Do it at a walk for a few weeks. When you feel comfortable at a walk, speed up to a trot. Trot between the barrels and break down to a walk when turning. After a week doing that trot for the full pattern. when you feel safe at a trot, start cantering between the barrels and then break down to a trot around the turns. Then canter the full pattern. Finally, you can gallop the pattern and increase the speed of the gallop as you practice more.
